The Caribbean Container INC.(C.C.I.) FIDE rating tournament for junior
chess players continues tonight at the Ocean Spray Hotel, Stanley Place Kitty with junior players and their senior counterparts meeting for the sixth of the nine round competition.
At the end of the 5th round, veteran FIDE rated player, David Khan (1386) assumed the top spot with five wins from as many games and is set for a showdown with his son, Senior National Champion, Taffin, when they clash sometime tonight.
National Junior Champion Hai Feng Su will also stake a claim for honours after securing draws against FIDE rated players Taffin Khan (1809) and Shiv Nandalall (1715) during last weekend’s encounters.
The point standings after five rounds read: David Khan (5), Taffin Khan (4 ½), Cecil Cox (4), Anthony Drayton (3 ½), Shiv Nandalall (3) and Hai Feng Su (2). Four other players are bundled in the cellar on one point or less.
Tonight’s encounter will see David Khan up against Taffin Khan, Hai Feng Su playing Anthony Drayton, Cecil Cox opposing Ron Motilall, Ryan Singh versus Kana Khan and Shiv Nandalall taking on Sham Khan.
The six junior players are attempting to obtain lucrative ratings after engaging their senior counterparts, all FIDE rated. The World Chess Federation (FIDE) will grant the ratings based on the younger players’ performance in the tournament. The remaining two rounds are scheduled for Sunday May 20 next at Olympic House.
