Guyanese nationals, and more particularly those of Indian ancestry, recently celebrated the 174th Anniversary of the arrival of East Indians and though that day is gone the management of DeSinco of John and Mandela Avenue, Campbellville continues to honour the occasion when it organizes an inaugural 50 overs, one day cricket match dubbed the Lipton Tea Indian Arrival Day championship at the Everest Cricket Club Ground, Thomas Lands Eve Leary, on Sunday May 13 next.
The tournament will be sponsored by DeSinco under the Lipton Tea product and will feature players of the Gandhi Youth Organization (GYO) pitting their skills against those of the Everest Cricket Club (ECC). They will contest for a lien trophy which will go to the first team that wins three matches.
The captains of the two teams, Surrnedra Hirlal of the GYO and Troy Gonsalves of the ECC, joined Chief Executive Officer of DeSinco, Frank DeAbreu at the company’s headquarters yesterday afternoon to disclose details pertaining to the match.
Mr. DeAbreu expressed delight on behalf of his company for once again being able to contribute to the development of sports. He reminded that DeSinco has always contributed to every facet of national life as well as all sports disciplines. “Today we are contributing to cricket development even as we provide entertainment for Guyanese sports lovers,” affirmed the DeSinco boss. He retraced the history of the sport in years gone by when two teams, Cosmos and Everest competed for the Roger Cup. That tournament is now extinct, but Mr. DeAbreu wishes to relive those memories hence his anxiety to see the successful staging of the imminent tournament.
Captain of the GYO Surrnedra Hirlal, in brief remarks was very thankful to the sponsors for organizing the tournament. He promised to turn in an excellent performance especially since his boys are nurturing a special ambition, “We want to be the first to win the trophy,” he declared. Everest Captain, Troy Gonsalves was similarly in an upbeat mood and simply promised to turn a top performance. “We are just as keen, as our adversary, to win,” he pronounced.
Meanwhile, organizers will select an Indian affiliate to bestow a special honour for his contribution to the sport. This will be done through random selection. Members of the media will also be hosted at a vegetarian lunch at the match venue compliments of the sponsors, at 13:15hrs.
