By Franklin Wilson
The Guyana National Stadium, Providence will be rocking with action on and off the field of play tomorrow (Saturday) when the finals of the 3rd GT&T 10/10 nationwide softball cricket comes off with the best male and female teams set to collide.
Apart from the two most anticipated games in the competition, the inaugural International Cup softball match between Guyana and Canada will also be contested with both teams expressing confidence of upstaging the other.
Weeks of intense battles at venues throughout the length and breadth of Guyana have seem the top two male and female teams earning the right to face each other for the attractive cash incentives and other prizes at stake.
In the male segment, defending champions Wolf’s Warriors will be seeking to make it two in a row but will have to get past old rivals Regal X1 in the championship match while on the distaff side; new champions will be crowned when two of the better teams in Guyana face off. Trophy Stall Angels will take on 4R Lioness.
The male third place game brings together Unstoppable and Rockaway Auto Sales. There will be no female 3rd place match.
Fans have been coming out in their numbers to support their favourite teams and are expected to be out by the thousands tomorrow to ensure that they cheer their team on to victory and the much looked forward to, champagne moment.
Yesterday at their Main Office, Brickdam, main sponsor GT&T convened a press conference to update the media and ultimately, the fans, as to the progress of plans for tomorrow’s event which is expected to be mega in proportions.
On hand were CEO Yog Mahadeo, Chief Finance Officer Royston Rachpaul, 10/10 Coordinator Richard Sookdeo, Entertainer Kerwyn Bollers and PRO Nadia DeAbreu.
Mahadeo in remarks said that all and sundry can look forward to a wonderful day filled with pleasant surprises but fans will have to be at the venue to experience the surprises. Gates will be opened from 12noon with the first match, the male third place game setting the pace for the afternoon and evening.
“We always plan things in a grand way and so we have a packed programme for Saturday, we expect to have, as well as the games, entertainment, millions of dollars in giveaway, credit, and we also expect to do the final draw and hand over of the FAN SUV that has been advertised.”
“We also plan to have a lot of interaction during the games with spectators, players and also during the game we expect to have some of the GT&T stars going around, meeting and interacting with people.”
Mahadeo said that he is looking forward to a wonderful final day and is encouraging all to bring out the family and enjoy some exciting matches with the local softball cricket stars, male and female, on show.
One of the coordinators of the 10/10 tournament, Richard Sookdeo noted that they are pleased with the level of play displayed this year especially among the females.
“We are happy to see the level of play on the rise over the past couple of months. The ladies especially have grown leaps and bounds.”
Sookdeo said that rain will not stop the action since the Providence Stadium is one of the better drying grounds in the world.
On the entertainment side of things, Bollers stated that the aim is to put together a decent package for the fans as an added incentive after the on-field action would have ended.
“So at the end of all the excitement inside we are going to bring the curtains down with some more excitement on the outside and based on what I’ve seen so far fans are in for a treat. We will use the opportunity to highlight some of the young talent that GT&T would have invested in over the past few years.”
Contestants from the GT&T Feel the Beat Competition, the English & Bollywood Jingle and Song competition winners will also be performing along with the Karma Band of Trinidad and Tobago.
Bollers intimated that exposure of the young talented local artistes is vital to their continued development.
CFO Sookdeo in his remarks stated that GT&T would have invested over 50 Million dollars in this year’s tournament whilst about Thirteen-Thousand players would have been exposed and able to participate during the tournament which reached every community in Guyana this year.
“Saturday’s event is a paid one with tickets on sale at $1500 for any seat in the stadium. With this entrance fee you get a tee shirt and you get to see the cricket and view the show as well as get a chance to win huge prizes and giveaways and win the FAN SUV. I think it’s a great package but fans will have to be at the Stadium in order to have a chance to cash in on any of these prizes.”
Other corporate entities that have teamed up with GT&T to bring off another successful 10/10 tournament are Banks DIH (Powerade &Vita Malt), Guyana Lottery, Kings Jewellery World, Cell Phone Shack, Gizmos & Gadgets, Impressions and NCN.
