Flying Ace Cycle Club (FACC) of Berbice has selected an 8-man team which includes
two overseas based riders to participate in this year’s 30th annual Independence Three-Stage Cycle road race which begins on Saturday morning with the first leg from Corriverton, Berbice to New Amsterdam.
The cyclists named are Neil Reece, Wazim Hassnu, Brian Harris, Elijah Bijadder, Rohan Persaud and Keith Griffith. While the two overseas based riders are Wasim Gafoor and Winston Thomas.
Yosmani Pol based in Miami, USA is the defending champion having won last year’s event in a time of Six hours 39 Minutes 34 Seconds (06: 39: 34).
Roraima Bikers Club’s Warren McKay finished second overall in (06: 40: 03) followed by Frank Taravieso (06: 40: 13), Phillip Clarke (06: 40: 24), Joshua Alexander (06: 42: 26) and 2010 champion Antonio Quintero closing out the top six places in (06: 42: 26).
Pol had won stages one and two while overseas-based Guyanese Godfrey Pollydore won the final stage, last year.
This year’s second stage will be contested on Saturday also from 14:00hrs moving off from Rosignol, West Bank Berbice to finish on Carifesta Avenue in Georgetown whilst the third and final leg will see the riders moving off at 08:00 on Sunday from Cara Cara in the Linden to finish on Homestretch Avenue in the City.
The riders are expected to cover an overall distance of 171.5 miles or 274.3 kms.
