Antarctic Maintenance and Repairs yesterday made a financial contribution that will go toward the Champion Male and Female Athletes at the upcoming President’s/Jefford Track and Field Classic that is scheduled for May 20 at the MSC Ground, Linden.
The Champion Male and Female Athletes are the athletes to gather the most points competing in their respective events.
Those outstanding athletes will be rewarded financially with a trophy being presented to them for their feats at the third edition of the Meet.
Managing Director of Antarctic Maintenance and Repairs, Kent Phillips, said that his company is honoured to support the continued development of athletes through the contribution. He said that he likes the fact that the top athletes will be financially rewarded.
In accepting the contribution, President of the Athletics Association of Guyana, Colin Boyce said that the gesture was a great one given the fact that when he and Phillips were athletes there were no prominent sources of financial reward though their training was rigorous.
“It is good that former athletes like you could come forward and give back to the sport. Training wasn’t easy in our time and you had to do it if you wanted to win, but there was no where that you could have gone locally to compete knowing your prize was financial,” Boyce said.
He thanked Phillips for the contribution and indicated that one of the reasons the meet was first conceptualised was to ensure that clubs and athletes were rewarded financially as a means of the clubs becoming more financially stable.
The President’s/Jefford Classic will commence at 10:00hrs on May 20 with the Heats then there will be a break for athletes to recover before the Official Opening Ceremony at 2pm. Following those speeches, the Classic continues with all finals in the Mining Town.
