After several weeks of intense action, the West Ruimveldt Football Club distinguished itself from among the heap and carted off the championship trophy when the Mayor’s Cup Annual Knock-Out Inter Ward Football tournament concluded at the Georgetown Football Club (GFC) ground recently.
That team received the fruits of its labour when the organisers staged the prize giving ceremony at the Mayor’s office, yesterday morning.
Mayor Hamilton Green performed the honours moments after he had delivered the keynote address and congratulated the winners while singling out organiser, Lennox Arthur for special commendations. He said that he was a mite disappointed with the meager input of the corporate community as well as the government.
Mr. Green pointed out that football is a sport that allows residents of the ghetto to find their identity while expressing themselves. “But I am concerned that there are a set of gurus around the sport that are not interested in the development of the youths,” exhorted the Mayor. He urged the young footballers to sound their voices against such atrocities so that all monies allocated for football development are used for its designated purpose.
Mr. Green also reminded the ball weavers that the last elections have created an environment for accountability and this should auger well for the development of the sport. “Now that there is a new arrangement in the parliamentary composition I am confident that stakeholders will be able to keep a tighter rein on the funds allocated for sports development,” said Mr. Green.
He closed by advocating the introduction of the sport into the schools from the primary level so that valuable lessons could be taught when the youths are at an impressionable age. He also appealed to the executive of the ruling football bodies to adapt a unified approach in their developmental strategies.
Organiser, Lennox Arthur expressed gratitude to the Mayor for his usual support even as he commended the many teams for turning in credible performances. Following a suggestion by Mr. Green, Mr. Arthur hinted at an imminent Inter-Ward or Inter-Block tournament to be staged shortly.
The winning team carted off $500,000 put up by Banks DIH while the runners-up pocketed $250,000 donated by Digicel. The third place finishers received $150,000 donated by Beepat and Sons while the Guyana Beverage Company Ltd took care of the $100,000 fourth prize.
Several other corporate entities have also contributed to the success of the tournament including MACORP, John Fernandes Ltd, Nazar Mohamed of Mohamed’s Enterprise, Lombard Street, CIDI, General Equipment Guyana Ltd, New Thriving Restaurant, Sterling Products and Courtney Benn Construction Company.
