Police have charged a destitute man for the murder of US-based Guyanese, Walter Sankar, who died
last Saturday from a brutal beating with a length of galvanized pipe.
The accused, 42-year-old Patrick Leonard, was remanded to prison yesterday after appearing in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court. The accused, who has no fixed place of abode, is to return to court tomorrow.
According to reports, Sankar, 69, was in a shop in Fort Street, Kingston, last Wednesday, when Leonard, a destitute who roams the seawalls, struck him repeatedly in the head with the galvanized pipe.
The injured man succumbed three days later at the Woodlands Hospital. The Brooklyn resident had returned to Guyana on Boxing Day 2011 for the first time in 15 years to spend some time with his two sons, the only two of this five children residing in Guyana.
Leonard was arrested and taken to the Brickdam Police Station before being transferred to the Grove Police Station.
