Terrific Taylor gives Windies 2-0 lead

to lead West Indies Women to a superb victory by seven runs in the second T20 International against Sri Lanka, at Kensington Oval yesterday.
The 23-year-old Jamaican proved why she is the best female player in the world at the moment as she starred with both bat and ball to give her side a 2-0 lead in the five-match series.
Taylor, who won the ICC’s Women’s Cricketer-of-the-Year award for 2011, made 62 as the home team rattled up 129-4 off their 20 overs. She then had the excellent figures of 4-0-23-3 as the Sri Lankans were restricted to 122-9 off 20 overs. The West Indies fielding was exceptional with some brilliant catches and three run outs by the amazing Deandra Dottin.
The match went down to the wire and it required Taylor’s calmness under pressure to keep her team in the game. With 32 to win off the last four overs, she took the crucial wicket of Deepika Rasangika for a top score of 39 off 42 balls to turn the match in West Indies’ favour.
Taylor bowled the penultimate over and grabbed two wickets while Dottin had a superb run out with a rocket throw from the deep midwicket boundary.
Earlier in the day, West Indies went on the rampage in the last five overs, thumping 47 runs, as they rattled up a challenging total. A boundary-studded fifth-wicket stand of 46 off 36 balls between Taylor and Guyanese teenager Shemaine Campbelle boosted the Windies cause at the ‘death’.
Taylor played a number of powerful shots including a huge six into the Garfield Sobers Pavilion. Her ninth half-century at this level came from just 44 balls and included five boundaries. Campbelle, the fleet-footed teenager contributed a run-a-ball 22 not out and was brilliant running between the stumps.
The innings was given a great start with an opening stand of 50 between Taylor and the veteran Juliana Nero, who made 29 off 32 balls with five boundaries. This was the ideal launching pad.
West Indies now lead the five-match T20 Series 2-0. The two teams now move on to Trinidad for the final three matches at the Queen’s Park Oval.
