Now that the 2012 budget is over, citizens can look forward to a number of changes within the education system which Education Minister Priya Manickchand had offered as measures to boost and upgrade Education in Guyana.
Among the numerous matters mentioned for improvement in Parliament on April 16, Manickchand said that greater measures must be put in place to assist disabled students, monitoring and guiding programmes of the Learning Channel and greater focus to be placed on the next major subject; science.
Manickchand also spoke of the growth in what she described as the greatest focus right now for the education system, universal secondary education. The Minister informed the House of Assembly that the government is working very hard to provide secondary education for all students in Guyana while making particular reference to students living in hinterland areas. They were described as the most difficult to reach due to their locations.
The Minister however mentioned that it was for those reasons that certain strategies such as increased lodging for students and additional teacher training centres were being built across the country.
Manickchand noted that 22 dormitories were built across various areas where at least 2000 children were able to obtain accommodation for studies. She also said that 10 training centres were also constructed for training teachers and better equipping them for the classroom.
For the learning channel, the Minister said she had already spoken to various entities who will be working to place better programmes and more informative segments on the station. She spoke of monitoring and evaluating the material that is shown on the television.
Apart from that, Manickchand said that science has been an area which the Ministry realized needs much attention. She said that focus was going to be placed on how pupils receive the subject and further, produce ways that would encourage students to adopt the subject and conquer it.
Manickchand spoke briefly about putting in place measures to assist disabled students. She said that the Ministry will not be giving those students the back bench as they realize that more work has to be done with accommodating those students.
