Leon Belony chalked up an impeccable 6 points with a positive spread
of 663 to capture the top honours in the Labour Day Open Scrabble championships staged on Tuesday, at the Malteenoes Sports Club.
National Scrabble Champion, Abigail McDonald was relegated to second place after amassing 5 points with a positive spread of 202, while Moen Gafoor closed off the podium spots with 4 points and a positive of 184.
Belony signaled his intention from the very first game when he defeated Julian Skeete by a spread of 125. Before the morning sessions were through Belony had also defeated Colin Chichester (65) and Ulric Harris (86) to end the pre-lunch session on 3 games and a positive spread of 276. His post lunch victims were McDonald (122), Gafoor (111) and Wayne Cave (150).
McDonald shrugged aside the loss to Belony to register wins over Orlando Michael (92), Gafoor (43) and former national champion, Fred Collins ((13). Her post lunch victims were Cave (150) and Harris (82). Gafoor’s four points were amassed through victories over Cave (19), Maurice Munro (214), Harris (66) and Collins (19).
Meanwhile, Munro continued his good showing and for the second time in as many tournaments was adjudged the best player outside of the top ten rating. He conceded two early games, one to Collins, but still managed to finish with 4 points and a negative spread of 210 to capture the prize.
The players will convene once again this Saturday to compete for honours in the Arrival Day championships slated for the same venue. They will also be at the Maltenoes Sports Club for the regular practice sessions from 18:00hrs tonight.
