– packed schedule planned for NBA players
By Edison Jefford
The National Community Basketball League (NCBL) has clearly outlined its celebrity basketball weekend that will feature, for the first time in Guyana, NBA players. The weekend is expected to conclude the nationwide League that is aimed at resuscitating the sport.
“The celebrity basketball all-star weekend is organised primarily to promote and revive the sport of basketball in Guyana. It’s set as a vehicle to re-energise basketball players, while at the same time discover new talents from the neighbourhoods and communities around Guyana,” organisers of the NCBL have told Kaieteur Sport.
Kwame Mentore and Robert ‘Bobby’ Cadogan are the main Coordinators of the NCBL with Link-Up Media and Guyenterprise along with GT&T, Gizmos and Gadgets, Churches Chicken, Banks DIH, Giftland OfficeMax and the Ministry of Youth, Culture and Sports embracing the NCBL at the corporate level.
“The celebrity all-star event will feature for the first time, at least four NBA players gracing the shores of Guyana along with top Guyanese basketball players who now reside in the USA,” Cadogan and Mentore, informed this newspaper.
The weekend activities are set to run during the CARICOM holiday weekend June 29 to July 1 at the Princess Hotel and the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall. The Coordinators have said that the aim is developmental since they could not have normally paid for the superstars.
“It should be noted as well that the spinoff from such programmes tend to not only lead to repeat visits, but also significant investments by these individuals who are all millionaires and is always keen on investing wherever they go. It will be a fantastic opportunity for the country to promote its Eco Tourism Product to these global icons,” they continued.
While in Guyana the NBA players will have a hectic schedule that includes: Charity Dinner and Private Auction that will raise funds for a charity organisation that caters to the needs of the less fortunate; some of the auction items will include autograph jerseys, hats, sneakers, balls and other memorabilia.
Autograph Signing and Photo Op that will be an once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for fans and supporters to get up-close and personal with some of the most popular sports icons in the world. They will be able to take pictures and get their favourite autographs.
Basketball Clinic for Kids, Teens and Coaches that are designed for students and coaches of the game and all others who have a passion to learn the game the right way. The clinics will include different drills, teaching basketball fundamentals and other skill sets.
Read to Achieve Sessions that will be another great opportunity for children to interact with their NBA stars. This is when the kids get a chance to be thought how to read by the NBA players. At the end they will be all given books and other merchandise.
Celebrity All Star Game that will give patrons the chance to see their favourite star on the court in a game situation. The All-star game will feature two teams; one with Guyanese-based players from the USA with college experience, and the other with a local All-star team featuring the best of-the-best in local talent.
