The semi-finals was played before a capacity crowd and word from the community is that this Saturday’s climax in this year’s Linden segment of the Guinness ‘Greatest of the Streets Futsal Football Competition will easily surpass the numbers seen, during the final four playoffs.
Growing in popularity on every occasion it has been held to date in this country, the final of the competition will see Hard Knocks and Amelia’s Ward Russians square off for the top prize of $500,000 with the losing team set to receive $250,000, while the third place playoff is between Pokerburg and Retrieve Unknowns which is also anticipated to be an exciting matchup as well.
The winner of this clash will take home $150,000, while the loser collects $100,000.
The eagerly anticipated finale has all the hallmarks of a mouth watering contest with Hard Knocks according to the pundits within the community slightly favoured, especially in light of their deadly shooters in the event of regulation and extra time failing to exact a positive result.
Amelia’s Ward Russians started out the competition slowly, but gradually picked up momentum and should not be overlooked to win the title.
Both teams recorded similar wins against their opponents in the semi-finals, winning via the penalty shootout route, but an outright result is being touted since they both possess the pedigree of players with the skill in this format of the game that could test each other’s defensive setup.
Despite the end of official activities for the Linden Town Week celebrations many overseas-based Guyanese from the Mining community are still in town and another carnival-like atmosphere is anticipated at one of the most conducive venues to host the grand final, the Wisroc / Amelia’s Ward Bus Park, adjacent the Mackenzie Market.
At the completion of the finals, outstanding players will also be recipients of special prizes compliments of the sponsor Banks DIH and a number of top executives of the Company are expected to be on hand to witness the games and participate in the presentation ceremony.
Starting time is 19:00 hrs.
