VVR School’s Basketball Championship 2012
The 2012 Victory Valley Royals School’s Basketball tournament could not
have asked for a better climax, as scores turned out to see Linden Technical Institute (LTI) win the championship trophy following an entertaining 63 – 50 points victory over the Christianburg Wismar Secondary School (Multi).
Anyone randomly entering the Mackenzie Sports Club Hard Court on Thursday last would not have thought that it was a school’s basketball game being contested with the high level of play displayed between the two finalists.
The atmosphere was most fitting for the culmination of the eighth staging for the tournament that gives schools the right to brag about being the best basketball playing institution in Linden.
Led by a game high 20 points from the finals eventual Most Valuable Player (MVP) Stanley McIntosh, LTI had to dig deep to outclass the hard playing ‘Multi’ team, who came out firing on all cylinders.
Linden Fraser, LTI’s go-too-guy found himself in serious foul trouble, picking up four in the early stages of the first half and was subjected to the bench as he watched Multi grind on his team’s defence in his absence. The first half ended with LTI trailing 22-31.
Emanuel Archibald had averaged over 20 points per game for Multi heading into Thursday’s final, but the hard playing shooting guard was only allowed four points in the contest, thanks to good defending by LTI’s Jemmar Bethune (12).
But what Archibald lacked on the ball, he made up off of it as he bothered his rivals with staggering defence.
However, while it seemed that Multi would be celebrating a victory, McIntosh begun an offensive onslaught – burying deep three 3 pointers while playing his teammate Joe Webster in
the post who became a bother for the eventual losers.
Webster took up the challenge after Fraser was taken out because of his foul problem and scored 15 crucial points for LTI in the contest.
Fraser (9) eventually returned and showed why he was unarguably the best power forward in the country when he led his team defensively while being able to not pick up his final foul that would’ve seen him being a spectator (fouled out).
It was one block-shot after another as the free for all that Multi enjoyed in the paint was no more. Traven ‘Babylon’ Dryden – Multi’s muscle-man, who finished with 12 points, was outplayed in the second half by both Webster and Fraser. Terron Welch who also had a very good first half, tried to shoot his team back into the game but time ran out on him as he finished with 12 points.
Thanks to Digicel one of the sponsors of this year’s tournament, Dryden also received one of the MVP trophies which were handed over by the company’s representative Dwayne Scott.
Archibald totaled 138 points in the tournament and went home with the “Most Points in the tournament” trophy and also the leading scorer for the second place team trophy which was sponsored by Marlon Josiah.
As customary the organizers, selected five players who they think were the most outstanding in this year’s event – Stanley McIntosh, Linden Fraser, Emmanuel Archibald, Joel Webster and Traven Dryden – and were outfitted with the Louis Webster sponsored All-Star T-shirts.
Meanwhile, Linden Foundation Secondary (LFS) upset last year’s winners Mackenzie High School (MHS) 65 – 40 to claim the third place trophy.
Prior to the start of the finals, Linden ‘Sancho’ Alphonso, the founder of the tournament, said that while he was happy to see the support of his friends and the Corporate world towards the staging of the event, he was not satisfied with the level of play outside of the two finalists, adding that it reflects poorly on the standard of the game.
