Police as well as relatives of a mentally challenged teenage girl who has been the victim of constant gang rape continue to comb several parts of the city and its environs with the hope of finding her before she suffers serious harm.
The teenager went missing on Tuesday, last, after leaving her Vryheid’s Lust, East Coast Demerara house with a female who is related to her family.
It’s been three days since the teenager disappeared and the woman who was the last known person to have seen her, remained in police custody up to last night.
Investigators are working on the theory that the woman lured the teenager away from her home and used her as a trafficking in persons victim.
However, the woman, who spoke to this newspaper, is maintaining that the teenager ran away from her and she is absolutely unaware of her whereabouts. The woman claimed that she is a distant relative of the girl and her family and not a family friend as was previously reported.
She explained that the girl’s mother would visit her workplace in the city and they had become very close, with her promising to visit the teenager’s home some time.
She stated that on Tuesday last she was in the area and she admitted that she did ask the girl’s mother to allow the girl to accompany her to Beterverwagting, a few miles further up the East Coast of Demerara, with the agreement that they would return before nightfall.
However she claimed that the person to whom she was going in Beterverwagting was not at home. But instead of returning to Vryheid’s Lust with the teenage girl, they proceeded to the city.
Her further explanations cast doubts about her story.
She claimed that she first went to Sophia to collect a telephone number for the person she was to meet in Beterverwagting, and was to head to the car park outside Demico House.
All the while she intended to take the teenager with her.
She told Kaieteur News that during her journey into the heart of the city, the teenager stopped and talked to a mixed race woman, but she could not hear what the conversation was about.
According to the woman as they continued towards the city, the teenager began walking briskly ahead of her and then suddenly broke into a run.
“Me foot bad, so I couldn’t run behind she,” the woman told this newspaper.
She said that that was the last she saw of the teenager.
But instead of contacting the girl’s mother, the woman claimed that she was so confused that she just went about her business.
Investigators do not believe her story and are holding her until they get word on the missing teenager’s whereabouts.
Recently, several underage girls were rescued from the interior, where they were lured by persons who forced them into prostitution.
