Dear Mr. Editor
Now this is not my intellectual property. I overheard some influential gentlemen discussing same and I am somewhat disappointed that with their status in society they have not even put this to the public for a debate.
With GRA being totally incompetent to create a level playing field among the nation’s workforce when it comes to collecting taxes, salaried workers, about 35 per cent, have no option but to part with 33.333% of their monthly income after clearing their meager threshold. The remaining 65 per cent get away scot free and the authorities claim that they, the authorities, will recover some revenue via VAT, incidentally which is utter rubbish.
Since I am a salaried worker and my “take home” is greatly reduced by this malpractice on the part of GRA, I strongly feel, as was discussed by those mentioned above, that the Pay As You Earn should be scraped and a Value Added Tax of 20 per cent be placed on the very items currently being taxed. (Those presently VAT free should remain so)
It could be assumed that a salaried worker is presently paying 49 per cent taxes on their monthly remuneration.
Again, Government workers do not pay taxes on their annual Leave Passage Allowance/Assistance, but the private sector workers are required to. However, if going overseas, the Private Sector worker gets a tax waiver.
The current Minister of Tourism, as have those in the past, is calling on locals to explore, tour and discover Guyana but yet for all, if one from the Private Sector wanted to use their Passage Assistance to pay for such a trip, our allowance is taxed, and when paying for transportation, boarding and lodging in our effort to discover Guyana we are required to pay taxes again, VAT.
So the goodly gentleman is giving his blessings to those who use their Passage Assistance to go and discover foreign lands and deny those who want to discover this beautiful land of ours.
Could/would the relevant authorized persons please address and /or grant some consideration to the above?
