By Samuel Whyte
Legendary Guyanese and West Indies Cricket icon Clive Hubert Lloyd
was the feature speaker when the Rose Hall Town Youth and Sports Club held their 22nd Annual Awards and presentation ceremony on Sunday at the St Francis Community Developers Annex restaurant at Area H Rose Hall Town.
Lloyd the former West Indies two times winning World Cup Captain, spoke on the theme “The Importance of Discipline for Young Cricketers and his Vision for Guyana’s Cricket.” Lloyd in his address to the packed audience started with the meaning of the word discipline in which he noted that it is the training expected to produce a specific type of pattern or behaviour. He connoted that if discipline is exercised in a specific venture by someone then ultimately there will be a positive effect.
He stated that at some time in our life each of us must have been influenced at some stage by some sort of propriety in our personal development as responsible members of society. He stated that it is reasonable to assume therefore that in life, without a foundation of good discipline we are likely doomed to a future of not necessarily failure, but of uncertainty and instability. The former West Indies Captain went on to state that, ‘In life good, discipline, some good fortune and proper decision making is more often than not a formula for success.’ He stated that it is the same with sports, which is a reflection of life.
Lloyd informed that from his vantage point, discipline is perhaps the most critical element for the success of a young cricketer. Natural talent is just a part of it. You must have discipline to succeed. “You must have discipline in your Fitness, training, bowling, batting, fielding and all other aspects of the game,” he noted. Mentioning himself as an example, he said that during most of his formative years, mostly at the Demerara Cricket Club, he worked relentlessly and tirelessly, mostly without a coach and the kind of modern technology available nowadays and made significant advancement.
He mentioned that the young cricketer must also develop the discipline of mental toughness to be able to occupy the crease for several hours. “You must make maximum use of every opportunity at the crease.” “You should have the discipline to play every delivery on its merit and the bowler should aim to bowl every delivery to take a wicket or to restrict scoring,” Lloyd pointed out. The current Government IMC Chairman mentioned Chanderpaul has a hallmark of discipline. Stating that when he was Chanderpaul’s manager and they would have finished playing for the day Chanderpaul would ask him, ‘manage’ throw a few deliveries to him because he loves to bat and makes use of every opportunity given him.
Lloyd, who holds numerous awards in Guyana and around the world, stated that the young cricketer must have the discipline to know that he is playing in a team. He said that such attributes was the hallmark in the team that he led that dominated world cricket and made the people in the Caribbean proud.
Touching on his vision for Guyana’s Cricket, he stated that his vision would include the complete overhaul and reversal of the current decline and comprehensive improvement of the game at all tiers from U13 to national/ international levels. They must be a proper administrative structure. The board must be duly elected by free and fair means and officials must be qualified and committed persons. The board must be constituted to have regular and impromptu audits. Coaching and the use of technology must to an integral part of the board’s future development.
Lloyd in his well put over and elaborate speech to the packed audience that included another former West Indies great, Basil Butcher and other dignitaries, touched on a wide variety of areas and topics that would see a complete overall of Guyana’s cricket from the Under 13 level to administration. That would include a cricket academy and massive inputs from both the government a non governmental agencies. In short, all must get involved in the rebuilding, reorganizing and retooling of Guyana’s cricket.
Club founder and Secretary/ CEO Hilbert Foster gave an elaborate overview of the club’s more than 130 programmes and of the club’s rise from a little idea to the best in the Commonwealth.
Patron Beverly Harper was absent but in her speech which was read, She stated that she was proud to become the patron of such an august body and for the past year since she has been entrusted with the responsibility she has not regretted that decision one minute.
