Vaccination Week continued in Region Three yesterday as the Maternal
and Child Health Department aimed for 100 percent coverage of children.
The Parika Health Centre offered Yellow Fever, Hepatitis B, tetanus vaccines and MMR vaccines which are intended to guard against measles, mumps and rubella amongst other vaccinations to the public. The Health Centre was also awarded a plaque for the second year, for being the most outstanding of its kind.
There was a float parade with a banner emphasizing the importance of vaccination, and a walkathon was also organized where nurses and students participated in spreading the message under the theme “For you, for me, for everyone: Get vaccinated.”
Region Three has 16 health centres and 19 health posts situated at strategic locations along the West Bank Demerara, West Coast Demerara, East Bank Essequibo and also the Essequibo Islands, that cater to the vaccination needs of the Region.
Regional Health Office, Dr Ravindranauth Persaud said various activities were held at schools and health centres where information was given about the vaccines that are available.
“More importantly, persons learn about the new human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine, and how important it is in preventing morbidity and mortality in women with cervical cancer,” Dr Persaud noted.
Adding that home visits were done to also administer vaccines, Dr Persaud said persons “should not wait until they are ready to visit the embassy to be administered with certain vaccinations” since it is imperative for their health and well being.
“We are calling on all the people that we may have missed to come in at the various health centres and be vaccinated,” Dr Persaud noted.
He said if people have any queries whatsoever as it relates to vaccination, the centre is capable of providing the answers.
According to Rajdilari Looknauth, a nurse at the Parika Health Centre, many of the centre’s activities surround outreaches in the community where persons are enlightened and encouraged to be vaccinated.
Forty-five countries and territories of the Americas are participating in the 10th annual Vaccination Week in the Americas as well as the first-ever World Immunization Week, both from April 21-28.
According to the Pan American Health Organisation (PAHO), the goal is to vaccinate some 44 million people in 45 countries and territories of the Americas.
More than 365 million people of all ages have been vaccinated during the past nine years in campaigns carried out within the framework of Vaccination Week in the Americas.
