Demerara Distillers Limited (DDL) under their brands, Pepsi and
Gatorade, announced their partnership yesterday, with the Guyana Amateur Boxing Association (GABA) on their Developmental Programme which begins in May and concludes in December for U-16 boxers in Guyana.
Sharda Veeren-Chand, Marketing Director of DDL announced the joint venture and stated that the Company is always looking for opportunities to give back to the communities in which they operate.
The Marketing Director revealed that they are confident that the GABA Developmental Programme will give the talented youths the exposure and development they need to take them to the next level in the sport. “This programme caught our attention because it provides gainful engagement for our young people who are the core of the Pepsi fan base. We are confident that this programme will give our young talent the exposure and development that they need to take them forward,” Mrs. Veeren-Chand stated.
Veeren-Chand further noted that it’s developmental programmes such as the GABA programme that allows athletes to make the Olympics, “When our young athletes make it to Olympics the entire country feels the pride. However this would not be possible without development programmes such as these.”
Veeren-Chand closed her brief remarks by saying that the partnership marks the beginning of a new relationship with GABA.
President of GABA, Steve Ninvalle, who disclosed that they received a response from DDL within a week after making the proposal stated that GABA is extremely overwhelmed with partnership with the company.
He further stated that the Cuban Coach, Franciso Hemandez Roldan, who was contracted for two years in the field of boxing in Guyana, will be working hand in hand with the boxers was they try to develop more boxing nurseries.
Ninvalle also disclosed that at least 60 boxers will be partaking in the GABA Gatorade U-16 programme which starts next month in Georgetown, the second programme will be staged in Rose Hall, Berbice with the aim of decentralizing boxing in Georgetown since Berbice has more gyms that the Capital City. The final programme will be held in the city in December.
