Hikers also defeat All Greys 3-0 and Old Fort and Saints draw 1-0
With teams fired up for victories, the second round of the John Fernandes
2nd Division League Competition started off with a bang when Hikers came up against the Bourda Boys.
The clash opened with Hikers jumping into the lead when Colonel Heywood netted in the 20th minute, beautifully finishing off a pass from Reginald Harper after he had beaten the GCC’s defence.
The Bourda Boys responded in the 38th minute through Shaka Gill, who found the back of the goal with a ferocious shot from the top of the circle.
This, however, was not enough to stop the Hikers as they forged ahead to 2-1 lead when Andrew Stewart in the 66th minute beat GCC’s goalkeeper Richard Hing and the win helped Hikers remain undefeated in the league so far.
The second game saw Saints succumb to the Airbenders 1-0 in a tough match that saw both teams create many opportunities to score, but just could not find the back of the nets. It was the Airbenders who finally broke the deadlock when Gabriella Xavier in the 69th minute hammered in a shot, sealing yet another victory for the team
On Sunday, the veteran All Greys took on the undefeated Hikers in an encounter that had the crowd on the edge of their seats.
Both teams fought tenaciously to open the scores and it took sheer skill and determination to give Hikers a 1-0 lead when Andrew Stewart found the back of the nets in the 13th minute. The All Greys applied pressure to the Hikers defence, but it was futile. Hikers broke free from the All Greys defence once more and Kurt Waddell beat goalkeeper Ryan Whitehead in the 18th minute which gave them a 2-0 cushion.
Hikers continued to press hard into the All Greys half and it was Randy Hope, who hammered in a shot in the 26th minute to take Hikers to 3-0 and it stayed that way until the end.
The second match between Old Fort and Saints was an intense clash between two teams looking to edge forward in the league. Old Fort opened the scoring with Dwight McCalman in the 13th minute after he dribbled past a host of Saints’ defenders and sent in his shot which beat goalkeeper Lorenzo Bethune in the uprights.
However, immense pressure displayed by the Saints allowed them to even the scores when Devon Scott in the 29th minute beat past goalkeeper Aderemi Simon with a deflection. Good saves by both goalkeepers kept the scores leveled and a draw resulted
