AAG National Youth, Junior & Senior Championship
By Juanita Hooper
Running Brave (RB) star athlete, Stephan James reminded University of Guyana’s athlete, Elton Bollers who alienated himself from James and Chavez Ageday in the 200m finals on Saturday that he was the best junior quarter-miler when he stormed his way to win the boys under-20 400m at the Athletic Association of Guyana (AAG) National Youth, Junior and Senior Championship at the Police Sports Club ground, Eve Leary, yesterday.
James, who looked like a hurricane throughout the race, clocked 48.90 seconds to leave Bollers meters behind to clock 51.30 seconds; Kadeem Peters of Enmore finished third in 52.50 seconds.
Tiffany Smith of Guyana Defence Force (GDF) took revenge on Police Progressive Youth Club’s (PPYC) Tiffany Carto in the junior 400m, separating herself from Carto on the homestretch to clock 59.90 seconds.
Tevin ‘de Rocket’ Garraway, Tirana Mitchell, Patrick King and Alicia Fortune blasted out of their blocks in the 200m to outclass their rivals and stamp the authority as the best youth and senior athletes.
Garraway, who represented PPYC, blazed the track in the youth 200m to clock 22 seconds after running unchallenged, RB’s Jason Yaw was second in 22.50 seconds. Mitchell of Mercury Fast Laners (MFL) clocked 25.30 seconds to outsprint RB athletes.
Senior athletes King and Fortune were equally impressive as Garraway, in the 200m striding to 21.40 seconds and 24.40 seconds respectively.
Jevina Straker of RB broke the handcuff of which the Police athletes (Adama Roberts and Jenella Jonas) arrested her with, in the 1500m to register 5:00.40 seconds.
CARIFTA bronze medalist, Andrea Foster was shining on field in the youth 3000m after sprinting down the homestretch to clock 11:22.70 seconds to take the gold medal.
Nathaniel ‘Brother’ Giddings also took gold in the 1500m in 4:19.20 seconds after displaying a wonderful sprint on the backstretch which Devon ‘Scooby’ Barrington of GDF could not have match.
Kevin Bayley continued his superb performances this year in the men 800m (1:55.90 seconds) and 1500m (4:11.30 seconds) to remain on top in the middle distance area.
Upper Demerara athlete, Winston Caesar, who was absent on day one of the competition in the field events, ruled in the triple jump when he bounded to a splendid 14m18cm. The 14m leap of which no other competitor was able to reach was good enough for first place. PPYC, Troy Williams was second with best leap of 13m34cm while long jump gold medalist, Leon Bishop, settled for third with 13m.
The women version saw Tracy Moses turning the tables on long jump gold medalist, Juanita Hooper, with her best leap of 10m35cm. Alita Moore’s 11m07cm leap won the junior female’s triple jump; Marcia Isaacs was second with 10m64cm.
Natasha Alder took the women’s javelin and shot put with throws of 31m69cm and 9m36cm respectively. Leslain Baird remained unbeatable in the javelin after sailing the object to 57m28cm to earn a gold medal.
The athletes under the age of 23 will be in action again Sunday at the Police Sports Club ground when the Under 23 Games gets under the starters and officials orders.
