– Prime Minister kicks off ball to signal start of tournament
The Georgetown Masters Easter Classic Knock-out Football Tournament kicked off Friday evening with Prime Minster Samuel Hinds signaling the official start of the Tournament by kicking the ball off in the presence of the players, officials, committee members, media and spectators at the Georgetown Football Club ground.
The Masters Easter Classic saw Georgetown FC and Thomas United FC drawing first blood in the tournament which has an estimated cost of $2.3 million.
The other two games which were contested between Beacon FC and Brasimex FC and Santos FC and East Coast FC concluded on a 1-1 draw.
Georgetown FC and Rastafarian Patriots FC set the atmosphere for the game in the exciting tournament when the referees signaled the commencement of the first encounter. The fierce battle between the two teams saw Georgetown FC overpowering the Rastafarians in the first half to open their account.
Shawn ‘Berbician’ Daniels, who missed a number of goal shots, was the scorer for Georgetown FC in the 15th minute. Daniels, who was a threat to the Rastafarians, scored the only goal for his team when he volleyed the ball directly into the net with a powerful right foot kick.
The Rastafarians defended their territory endlessly on resumption of the second half to ensure no goals were scored as Georgetown FC tried to register more.
The second game between Thomas United FC and Fruta Conquerors FC saw the former defeating the latter 2-0.
The intense battle between the two Masters teams in the first half concluded at 0-0 but on resumption of second half the determined Thomas United FC netted to ensure that they won the battle.
The two goals were scored by Wayne Poulis in the 47th minute and by Errol Solomon in the 58th minute.
Meanwhile, yesterday action in the Georgetown Masters Easter Classic Knock-out Football Tournament saw Huston Stars FC, Pele FC, Beacons FC and Heart of Oak easily defeating their opponents when the tournament continued with morning games.
Huston took a 2-1 victory over the Rastafarians who have already faced a defeat from Georgetown FC in their first match on the opening night.
Pele FC crushed Fruta Conquerors FC 5-1 in the second game to take their first victory in the tournament.
Beacon FC clawed Top Klass FC 2-1 to take their first win also after a draw with Brasimex in Friday night’s action; East Coast FC was defeated 0-2 by Heart of Oak in the final game for the day.
The tournament continues on Tuesday with four matches from 6pm at the GFC ground. (Juanita Hooper)
