– lone medal for Guyanese contingent
Chelsea Edghill added yet another Caribbean and Regional Table Tennis Federation (CRTTF) Cadet & Junior Championship title to her name last weekend when she won an Under-15 Girls silver medal at the 2012 competition that was held in La Habana, Cuba.
Edghill secured the lone medal for Guyana in the competition that Guyana fielded Under-15 and U-18 teams. Edghill had won gold at the same level in the U-13 category.
Playing against the region’s strongest and more prepared players from hosts, Cuba and the Dominican Republic, Edghill silver medal performance was a beacon of light for the Guyanese contingent in Cuba.
In the Girls U-15 finals, despite a valiant effort playing against Idalys Lovett Valdez from Cuba, who had training stints in Germany, Edghill lost 8-11,10-12, 7-11 and 8-11 in a performance that was remarkable given Guyana’s all-round showing.
Her victory route came through victories against Ancelys Pichardo of the Dominican Republic 3-0; Yesenia Lazo Zamaro from Cuba 3-0. She to Cuba’s Anel Garcia 3-0 in the group stages of the competition.
She advanced out of this stage into the quarter-final round as the second placed player in the group. Here she faced and defeated Cuba’s Germanis Aguero 3-0 and advanced to the semi-final where she exacted revenge on Dominican Republic’s Kircia Diaz.
Diaz had beaten Edghill at home in Guyana last year when Guyana hosted the Caribbean Championships. But in Cuba, Edghill defeated Diaz 3-1 to reach the final where she succumbed to Valdez.
Cuba, Dominican Republic, Trinidad and Tobago, Jamaica, Aruba, Curacao, Guyana, St. Martin and Suriname were all represented at the Championships.
