A mother and three of her children ages, four, eight and 13 are now homeless after fire completely destroyed their home at Lot 21 B Agricola Public Road, East Bank Demerara.
According to reports, at around 15:30 hours yesterday, Allison Williams, her 13 year-old daughter and eight year-old son were sitting in their living room when the four year-old daughter alerted them about a fire in the bedroom.
Williams who seemed to be in a daze when this publication caught up with her, said that her youngest child ran into the living room asking if she would be beaten.
“She just come outside crying and say ‘mommy, I gon get licks, I burn up de bed’.”
The woman said she immediately ran to see what was going on in the bedroom but she could not enter as the bed was engulfed in flames.
Williams said all she could have done at that point was grab her children and run out of the burning two-storey house. The woman said she did not get a chance to save anything from the building. Her two younger children were seen clinging to her only clad in their underwear. The distraught mother is not sure who informed the Fire Service.
At the scene yesterday persons who occupy neighbouring buildings were seen crying hysterically fearing that their homes would have been destroyed.
However, the quick action by the fire fighters prevented the flames from catching onto the other buildings. This prompted praises for the fire fighters from the residents who had converged on the road way.
This publication was told that Williams and her children have only been occupying the house for a month after they were evicted from a property they were previously living in.
This has been the second fire to occur over the holiday weekend. On Good Friday morning, fire destroyed over $10M in groceries at a stall located in Stabroek Bazaar. That fire is believed to have been electrical in origin.
