President of the Guyana Draughts Association, Jairam and National draughts champion, Khemraj Pooranmall left Guyana yesterday for neighbouring Suriname to participate in a tournament arranged by the Suriname Draughts Association in commemoration of that country’s 60th anniversary celebrations. Activities get underway tomorrow, April 1 and conclude April 14 next.
Several other countries would be vying for honours including Holland, Curacao, Trinidad and Tobago, French Guiana and the hosts.
While Pooranmall is the national champion on the 100 square board, Jairam was the only local player to play unbeaten when local draughts players traveled to the same country October last year for a goodwill tournament. He is optimistic of replicating that feat.
Mr. Jairam said that several other players were shortlisted to travel but experienced difficulties in procuring the requisite funding.
