Winston ‘Aged Master’ Stoby became the first Guyanese and Caribbean lifter to
hold a World Record in any category when he recorded a Dead Lift of 265.5kg whilst also setting new records in the Squat (242.5kg) and Bench Press (137.5kg) for a total of 645.5kg in the Men Masters M2 category at the 6th Annual International Powerlifting Federation (IPF) / North American Powerlifting Federation (NAPF) / Caribbean Championships, at the University of the Virgin Islands, Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas.
In the 74kg class, Stoby also captured gold whilst equaling the Squat record of 242.5kg. He set a new Dead Lift record of 265.5kg (old 250kg) and totaled 637.5kg (old 645.5kg). Paul Adams copped silver in the 74kg category.
Stoby led a list of gold medalists and record breakers, himself and Vijay Rahim claiming double gold on a very productive day for Guyana. Also racking up gold medal performances were Runner-up sportsman of the year 2011 Randolph ‘The Accomplisher’ Morgan, Sporstwoman of the year 2011 Dawn McCammon Barker, Gumendra Shewdas and Anis Ade Thomas. All of the above also broke records in the process of their outstanding performances.
These exceptional athletes have once again vindicated the tremendous faith that the Guyana Amateur Powerlifting Federation (GAPF) President and Executive have placed in them when they blew away the best of the Caribbean despite facing financial challenges when it came to raising the required funds to travel.
Their perseverance has surely paid great dividends with the GAPF for the first time being able to field a full strength team at an overseas championship.
Reigning Caribbean overall champion Randolph ‘The Accomplisher’ Morgan (83kg) again put his opposition in perspective when he captured gold in the 83kg category, teammate Germaine Snagg bombed out in Bench Press.
Morgan in the process, broke his own records with a new Bench Press standard of 220kgs (old 215kg), Dead Lift 320kg (old 295kg) and Total 835kg (old 807,5kg).
In the Women’s Open category, Dawn Barker competed unchallenged to take the gold medal in the 84+ class with fellow Guyanese Kimberly Mars settling for silver in the 84kg category.
Barker broke her own Caribbean records she set in 2011: Squat 240kgs (old 227.5kgs), Dead Lift 195kgs (old 182.5kg) and Total 550kgs (old 540kg).
In the Men’s Juniors (Group A), competing in the 59kg division, Vijai Rahim copped gold as he set new Caribbean records in the Squat 192.5kg (old 182.0), Dead Lift 225kg (old 210kg) and Total 507.5kg (old 490kg).
In the Men’s Open and same class, Rahim blew away all and sundry again to cop gold; in the process he set a new Dead Lift record of 225kg (old 210kg).
In the Men’s Sub-Juniors (U-19) 53kg, Gumendra Shewdas showed his class on debut at this level lifting his way to gold.
In the Men’s Juniors (Group B) category (83kg), Anis Ade Thomas romped to gold while breaking his own 2010 records in the Squat 252.5kg (old 242.5kg), Dead Lift 292.5kg (old 275kg) and Total 665kg (old 630kg).
In a rather unfortunate situation, 59kg competitor Suraj Shewdas bombed out in squat, both brothers having to compete in borrowed suits after the IPF disallowed their brand name due to non payment by the company of the IPF dues.
The other Guyanese athletes down to compete were Karel Mars (105kg) and Colin Chesney (120kg). According to latest reports Mars copped a silver medal, while Chesney bombed out during his lifts.
According to information from the GAPF recapturing the Team Championship would have been made much more difficult given the fact that Suraj Shewdas and Germaine Snagg were not able to add to the points table. At the time of receiving this report, Puerto Rico were ahead of Guyana by 2 points.
