Prison officials are investigating the death of Steve Weever, an inmate who was on remand at the Georgetown Prison while nursing a gunshot injury.
Kaieteur News understands that 50-year-old Weever, also called Steve Anthony, was pronounced dead on arrival at the Georgetown Hospital at around 19:30 hrs on Wednesday.
According to sources, Weever was remanded in March with a gunshot injury to the thigh and was admitted to the prison infirmary.
He was taken to the GPHC on Wednesday night after he was seen lying motionless in the infirmary.
Kaieteur News had reported in January that Weever and another man, identified as Carlos Grant, were shot while allegedly attempting to steal bottles from a businessman at Waterloo Street.
According to reports, the businessman was aroused by a loud noise on his premises.
He went to investigate but was confronted by two men armed with a spade and a cutlass.
The men allegedly attacked the businessman, who shot both intruders in their thighs.
They were both admitted to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation.
Weever had told Kaieteur News that he was going to the assistance of the businessman when the man held him at gunpoint.
He was subsequently charged. A source said that Weever was to have returned to court yesterday.
