The Providence National Stadium will host the Bounty One-Day Hockey Challenge tomorrow as the first competition for top hockey players in the country.
The Providence Stadium provides the best surface for hockey in the country and probably the region and the quality of hockey on display is expected to be of the highest quality.
The competition will feature invited men’s teams from top clubs GCC, Old Fort, Supernova and Hikers along with women’s teams from GCC, Hikers and Bokra.
The Guyana Hockey Board (GHB) has limited the men’s competition to First Division teams ensuring its best players are on show for all matches in keeping with the quality of facility.
Several national men’s players are expected to be on show including national sweeper Dwayne Scott, skilful midfielder Kevin Spencer and Devin Hooper with his blistering pace at the strike for GCC.
The spectacular Simon brothers will be on show for Old Fort fresh off their recent big indoor victory at the end of 2011.
Their dominant midfielders Chris Low Koan and Jason DeSantos make them likely candidates to repeat their success.
The Hikers, meanwhile, will be bolstered by the return of the overseas-based magician Jerry ‘Skillaxe’ Bell who will add flair to the game of the ultra-productive Devin Munroe and prolific goal-scorer Robert France.
In the ladies division, national sweeper and vice-captain, Ulrica Sutherland is expected to bring her tenacity and pace to an already tough GCC defence.
Captain Sonia Jardine and Kerensa Fernandes who are among the country’s leading goal-scorers with their blistering strikes of the ball give the team equal offensive balance.
The Hikers traditional stars Maria Munroe and Cora Towler, who make up a potent part of the national women’s attack is anticipated to thrill the crowd with their offensive skills, while the young, fit Bokra side with the Xavier and Woodroffe sisters will this year also be genuine contenders for the trophy.
With the top quality venue and new sponsor Bounty Farm Ltd, the GHB expects a thrilling affair as teams will anxiously want to produce their best hockey and to embrace the coveted winners’ trophy.
The Hikers and Supernova men’s teams get the first touch at 09:00hrs and games are expected to run until 17:00 hrs.
