A mentally challenged man who tried to attack police with a knife was shot in the groin by police ranks from the newly commissioned North Ruimveldt outpost on Tuesday night.
The man, 23-year old Seon Bamfield is presently nursing a gunshot wound in his groin.
Police in a press release stated that around 23:35 hours they had responded to a report of assault and threatening behaviour at Beaver Street, North Ruimveldt, Georgetown, where they confronted Bamfield.
The police said that during efforts to arrest Bamfield he attacked the ranks with a knife, causing the police to resort to the use of force and he was shot.
He has taken to the Georgetown Hospital where he has been admitted a patient under guard.
According to a source, Bamfield who was residing in Barbados where he was treated for depression before being sent back home was always in the habit of “tormenting” members of his family as well as neighbours.
The source said that on Tuesday night he was involved in a confrontation with one of his male cousins, who he physically assaulted at their Beaver Street North Ruimveldt residence.
Other family members went to the nearby police outpost to report the matter.
Two ranks accompanied them to the scene of the assault, one with a handgun and the other with a rifle, after they were warned about Bamfield’s violent tendencies.
“When they come, they tell he put up he hand and he put it up. But then he right hand go to he side and all I hear is, bow!” the source said.
Kaieteur News understands that the police did recover a knife on Bamfield’s person. They also recovered another knife yesterday during a search of the area where the confrontation occurred.
According to the source, Bamfield was previously incarcerated for assaulting a neighbour. While in the lock-ups he reportedly got involved in a confrontation with other prisoners.
