As more focus continues to be placed on skills training and developmental
programmes that target vulnerable youths in society, the Canadian High Commissioner to Guyana, David Devine yesterday officially commissioned the GRECO Agricultural Enhancement Project Greenhouse at Victoria, East Coast Demerara (ECD).
The Building where the institute is located once housed the Guyana Radio and Electronic Company that made radios and radiograms locally.
The first stages of the agricultural project commenced in November, last and operations such as the actual planting of crops began about two months later.
Desmond Saul, Principal of the GRECO school, told Kaieteur News that although the entire greenhouse was not functional, a lot of progress has been made.
Parsley, thyme and celery were some of the crops that were planted in the newly commissioned greenhouse and are ready to be reaped.
“We suffered blows like others during the rainy season because we got flooded and such but the stuff could have been elevated and placed on tables so these were not destroyed…We want students to have some experience in farming and become skilled in agricultural areas so that their families and the entire community at large can benefit,” said Saul.
According to Saul, the educational institute has been in existence for nine years to date and has been supported by Canadian representatives in Guyana since.
The school offers training in areas such as carpentry, clothing & textile, electrical installation, and there are plans to continue its music programme.
The music teacher had passed away some years ago leaving that programme at a standstill.
“We used to farm on the ground here but we would always have to be after the students since they don’t like to read and fork but this is a good alternative, because this is hydroponics.”
Devine, stated that his Government was proud to have been a part of such a successful venture which aims to assist youths in society.
“Much work was done to have conceptualized, plan and implement such an effective project and technical support was provided by the Inter American Institute for Cooperation in Agriculture (IICA),” said Devine.
He explained that such a project was not only focused on teaching students new skills, but also gears to ensure that they become self sufficient and employable.
“This would be a major step for their communities since the project(s) are practical and effective on the ground”.
