-calls for disciplinary action to be shelved
The Youth Coalition for Transformation (YCT) is demanding that any process to discipline Assistant
Commissioner of Police, David Ramnarine, be halted and dismissed.
The YCT, the youth arm of A Partnership for National Unity (APNU), was responding to recent moves by Acting Commissioner, Leroy Brumell, to commence disciplinary action against Ramnarine.
This follows a request by Home Affairs Minister, Clement Rohee, who had indicated that he had lost confidence in Ramnarine for breaching the Force’s Standing Order that prohibits officers from speaking publicly on sensitive police matters.
Ramnarine had been outspoken on the controversial issue regarding the $90M that was allocated for the Guyana Police Force for elections and other duties.
According to the YCT, what Assistant Commissioner Ramnarine did was to take a stand against “corruption” even though he is working in an organisation filled with corruption.
“What he did was honourable in the sight of Guyanese who demand the truth and for that he is and will be respected,” the YCT told members of the media yesterday at a specially arranged press conference.
The body said that for the Home Affairs Minister to recommend that Ramnarine be disciplined goes against everything that his office should represent-truth and justice.
They stated that the present government has done nothing but continue its tyrannical hold on the people.
“Today we, the members of the Youth Coalition for Transformation are demanding that any disciplinary action taken against the Assistant Commissioner be withdrawn. Police officers must be allowed to carry out their duty without fear or ill will; they should not have to be looking over their shoulders when they attempt to do their jobs.”
The APNU youth arm called on all law enforcement personnel to denounce corruption.
“We are asking you to reclaim your dignity and aspire to do your job to the best of your ability. We will be standing behind you just as we are standing behind Assistant Commissioner Ramnarine,” the YCT declared.
They urged the Home Affairs Minister to focus instead on embattled Commissioner of Police Henry Greene who is caught up in legal wrangling over a rape allegation.
