…confident PPP/C would be removed
The Youth Coalition for Transformation (YCT) is confident that if Guyana were to have snap elections the incumbent People’s Progressive Party/ Civic (PPP/C) would be removed from office.
However, the group would not accept any elections until the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM’s) management changes.
“YCT would encourage every Guyanese to go back to the polls tomorrow, once the requisite changes are made.”
This is according to Nia Phil, member of YCT, during a press briefing yesterday. She stressed that the group remains resolute in their calls for there to be complete electoral reform and restructuring of GECOM before any elections are held in Guyana.
Phil noted that YCT also holds fast to its position that the Commission’s Chairman, Steve Surujbally and Chief Elections Officer, Gocool Boodhoo, should not be allowed to preside over any other elections, be it national or local government, after they failed to deliver ‘above the board’ elections last November.
Phil stressed that GECOM needs to be restructured before any other elections and YCT would continue to agitate for the identified heads of that entity to be replaced by competent individuals who will attract the support and confidence of the people.
She insisted that YCT has expressed its concern with the manner in which November 28, 2011 elections were conducted and even questioned the validity and accuracy of the results declared.
“Today we watch with even greater interest the findings revealed by the APNU (A Partnership for National Unity) with respect to its verification of Statements of Poll and concludes that this has provided added reasons for a complete overhaul of GECOM and the removal of Steve Surujbally and Gocool Boodhoo from the helm of that Commission. YCT will not relent in its call for these officials to demit office,” Phil said.
The organisation is encouraging all citizens to get registered as the new phase of the continuous registration has commenced a few days ago. “Every Guyanese, who has not picked up their ID cards must do so very soon,” Phil urged.
She stressed that it is clear that Government would not accept the fact that Guyanese have rejected and reduced it to a minority status. As such, Government is making many attempts to trick the nation into snap elections.
However, the YCT is watchful of the many overt and covert attempts being made by government to delude the people into this snap election plot with grave concern. “We have noticed a build up of actions by the PPP/C, by which they hope to hoodwink the people into rushing back to the polls,” she said.
Phil emphasised that the body has observed that within recent times, Government has been abusing the state media to intoxicate the public space with their snap elections gaff.
“YCT views this reality as a very serious development and urges all Guyanese to stay alert and refuse to be bullied by this regime,” she noted.
Phil added, “We have seen senior government functionaries, including the Attorney General, Anil Nandlall, appearing on state television (NCN) to intimidate Guyanese that should the parliamentary opposition not sign on to the government’s budget, when presented in the house that would lead to them going back to the polls.”
She related that YCT has received several complaints from members of some Indo-Guyanese communities that PPP/C’s activists are parading in those areas issuing threats to residents and blaming them for the PPP/C’s reduction to minority status.
