-supports Vieira’s call to recapture lap record
Determined to put last November’s disappointment behind his back, reigning
Group 4 champion driver Kevin Jeffrey speaking with Kaieteur Sport via telephone yesterday sounded optimistic about his chances of doing well at Sunday’s Guyana Motor Racing & Sports Club ‘Race of Champions’ Meet, at the South Dakota Circuit.
Jeffrey, who has been the spearhead of Guyana’s team over the past two years in the Caribbean Series, disclosed they are now back to the car’s primary engine which has been rebuilt and he therefore envisages no immediate problems with it.
“We are currently rectifying all the little niggles that beset us last November when the secondary engine that was used in the car blew as well and that setback forced us to start over from scratch,” Jeffrey stated.
The local speedster informed that apart from remedying the problems, the team is confident that his Mitsubishi Evo 8 will be faster and handle better than before.
“I would like to echo similar sentiments that were expressed in a previous issue by counterpart Mark Vieira when he said that aside from putting on a good show for the fans, the aim also should be to erase the existing lap record that was registered by Barbados’ Roger Mayers in November.
Jeffrey felt that someone of them has to do it and with the weather expected to be sunny and conducive for fast races, it sets up perfectly for one of us to shatter the 34.585 seconds registered by Mayers.
Asked to identify some of the drivers who could potentially spoil his party, Jeffrey pointed to Andrew King, Mark Vieira, Vishok Persaud, Paul Vieira and Canadian Sean Ten-Pow as those capable of putting down some blistering performances.
He added, Ten-Pow is relatively unknown, but could be the ‘spoiler’ on the day, while everyone knows Mar’s new car has been extremely fast, while Persaud’s machine is also working impressively.
Speaking about Paul Vieira, Jeffrey paid much respect to his consistency, adding he is always there in the mix and could be another one not to overlook.
King as always is the usual savvy veteran, who does little talking off the track and prefers to do it on the track with his driving skills and ability.
The other categories are equally interesting and cannot be counted out, especially those in the Group 2A and B where the drivers and cars are similarly matched.
The first race starts at 09:00 hrs and admission is $1500 for adults, while children and vehicles are free.
