A 23-year-old man was allegedly collared red-handedly during a burglary last Friday at Lot 50 Russell Street, Charlestown, Georgetown.
The man, Jason Lawrence, of Lot 7 Broad Street, Charlestown, was placed on $250,000 bail when he appeared before Chief Magistrate, (ag) Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court yesterday.
According to Police Prosecutor, Lionel Harvey, the accused had two accomplices and is alleged to have stolen items exceeding $720,000 in cash and household appliances from the home of David Grant.
The police alleged that Grant was awakened by a noise and upon checking, discovered that his front door was wide open and the articles missing.
He went to Broad Street, Charlestown and found the defendant and two other men, with some articles. They attempted to run when they saw Grant.
The victim, however, managed to grab Lawrence while his alleged accomplices escaped.
Lawrence was later arrested and a search was carried out at his home where some of the stolen items were discovered. He was later charged.
The Prosecutor objected to bail on the grounds that Lawrence is a flight risk. He also said that the defendant may hinder ongoing investigations.
The accused’s lawyer, Ronald Burchsmith, said that his client was at home and awakened by a noise. Upon checking, he discovered two men with the items in his yard.
Grant arrived shortly after and the two men ran away. The accused will have to return to court today.
