– Fortune makes first attempt to qualify for Olympics
Queen of the track, Alicia Fortune along with three other athletes, Cleveland Thomas, Stephan James
and Joshua Griffith of the Running Brave Athletic Club will be participating in an International Meet with the exception of Thomas when the Falcon Games gets under the starter’s order at Dwight Yorke Stadium, Bacolet, Tobago from March 31st to April 1st.
Fortune who suffered an injury during the course of last year, sprinted to a unparalleled 11.6 seconds in the women’s 100m at the Guyana Defence Force ground at the GDF Athletic Club Developmental Meet on Sunday.
The injury which offset the reigning sprint athlete certainly was not a hassle to her when she was under starter Derwin Eastman’s order at the start line. Fortune athletic form allowed her to separate from the other competitors about 20m before the conclusion of the race.
Speaking with one of the coaches of RBAC, Julian Edmonds stated that the team will be departing for the twin island on Thursday with their other Coach, Sham Johnny to meet with Thomas who is already in Trinidad for the Southern Games.
Edmonds also noted that a decision is still to be made on whether CARIFTA qualifier Stephan James will be attending the meet.
Fortune who noted that it was her second week of training on the track after her injury said that she will be entering in the 100m and 200m at the competition as she makes her first attempt to qualify for the London Olympic Games, “I am not far from where I was when I attained the injury. I will be better in a few months.”
Fortune who will be going all out to qualify for the Olympics added that she will not be partaking in the 400m since she do not want to run a bulk of events on one day, “I am focusing keenly on qualifying for the 100m or 200m as I make my first attempt for the Olympics Games.”
Griffith will be competing in the 400m while Thomas will be running the 800m and 1500m at the Games which starts this weekend.
