Dear Editor,
Ever since the new PPP government was sworn in after the 2011 elections Mr Ralph Ramkarran has taken on the role of attack dog against APNU and the majority opposition in parliament. Readers will recall that Mr Ramkarran had, in 2011, publicly stated that he wanted to be the PPP’s presidential candidate and he actively campaigned on the social network for such nomination.
Unfortunately for him the PPP stuck with its old Stalinist principle of democratic centralism that saw Jagdeo dictatorially cancelling the party’s membership congress and making Donald Ramotar the presidential candidate. Mr Ramkarran did not utter one word of dissent; not even a whimper.
He instead agreed with such Stalinist dictatorship, no doubt consoling himself that he would continue being the Speaker of the House and his law firm would continue to get state contracts.
Today, Mr Ramkarran is daily lecturing the public about “opposition dictatorship” in parliament. What hypocrisy! It was revealed that Mr Ramkarran’s law firm got a contract from GUYSUCO to sue a New York-based businessman. Mr Ramkarran’s firm then hired a US law firm that does not charge less than US$1000 per hour. The Chairman of GUYSUCO has stated that the fee is “substantial.” Yet when asked to tell the public what he was charging GUYSUCO Mr Ramkarran declined citing “confidentiality”, this at a time when sugar workers are being forced into slavery by GUYSUCO!!
Mind you Mr Ramkarran’s firm got this lucrative contract when he was Speaker of the Parliament and when President Donald Ramotar was a director on the GUYSUCO board. This is political incest. It is what the PPP has been doing since 1992 and wants to continue doing. Only the opposition majority in parliament can stop the plundering of GUYSUCO and the state treasury. Maybe this is why Mr Ramkarran is daily attacking the majority parliamentary opposition.
Mr Ramkarran is not at all interested in democracy in the PPP and if he cares not about democracy in his own party, then he does not care about it in parliament or at the national level. I urge Mr Ramkarran to shed his Stalinist dogmas and to spend his energies democratizing the PPP. Did someone say you can’t teach an old dog new tricks?
