Ever since Mandessa Moses destroyed Alisha Marques with a vicious left hook she has had difficulties securing an opponent. The lanky fighter had surrendered her inaugural professional bout to Barbadian Wendy Allen but despite holding a psychological advantage the Bajan seems reluctant to step in the ring for a return encounter.
After several attempts failed, organizers of the Friday Night Fights managed to contract Venezuelan, Anys Cedillo twice but the Venezuelan opted out both times for varying reasons. Moses was soothed after she was offered a replacement in Trinidadian, Tiana Sosa. Now, less than one week before fight night the dreaded jinx seems to be following her after it was revealed that the bout with the Trinidadian was called off after the latter fighter cited a death in her family and opted out of the bout. With insufficient time to procure an international replacement, the organizers have found a willing replacement in Pauline London and the two pugilists will clash over 6 rounds in a catchweight affair.
London is a hard worker and has been in the gym even though she was not contracted for the upcoming card. Her adjustment should be automatic and Moses should be warned not to be complacent, London has been a regular feature on the Pro/Am cards and has always provided entertainment even when she lost. She should provide the kind of test to cause trouble for Moses especially if the latter fighter enters the fray with overconfidence.
London works out at the Andrew Lewis Boxing Gym (ALBG), the same facility where Moses hones her skill. Last Friday afternoon she had rested from sparring after completing more than 8 rounds earlier in the week with several competent sparring partners. She had spent most of that afternoon applying techniques and later on engaging in power training. Now that she has been drafted into the card London has intensified activities and has assured her fans that she will be fit and ready to turn in her usual action packed performance.
Mark Austin will also engage Simeon Hardy over ‘8 rounds in a welterweight affair. Both pugilists are mouthing off with Hardy promising to unleash his infamous chin checkers, a deadly left hook that has flattened most of his opponents, and Austin dispatching a caveat, ‘if you lapse, you will collapse.’ The latter fighter scoffed at the former’s reputation saying that he has not fought anyone of substance.
Austin has hinted that he will be attacking Hardy’s body with testing punches in order to accomplish the task. “I am not afraid of Hardy; he will have to show me what he has in the ring,” Austin maintains.
Edmond DeClou was also hard at work at the ALBG. He said that he has trained to the hilt and is ready for whatever his opponent brings to the ring. George, a relatively young professional, somehow feels that he has what it takes to upset DeClou. They will match gloves in a middleweight contest but while spouting confidence, George is holding his cards close to his chest.
Rudolph Fraser and Gardel Roberts will square off for the second time after Fraser drew first blood and the latter boxer is leaving no room for errors. He operates out of the Harpy Eagle’s Boxing Gym and so far has sparred over 40 rounds with Dennis Thomas, Romeo Norville, Keeve Allicock and James Walcott. Fraser said that he is confident of replicating the earlier victory.
There are also four amateur bouts including the jnr/flyweight contest between Ansilla Norville (HE) and Keisha Arokium (RHJ). Middleweights, Romeo Norville (HE) and Ron Smith (FYF) will clash over three rounds, while Richard Williamson (PRBG) will square off with Delon Charles. His brother, Joel will box against Shawn Michael in a flyweight encounter.
The ProAm affair is the initiative of the GBBC in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture Youth and Sports and the National Communications Network. Admission fee is $1,000 and $500 for adults and children respectively. Fight time is 20:00hrs.
