Guyana girls’ team of Nicola Ramdyhan and Aretta Dey saved their best tennis for the final matchup at the Junior Fed Cup which ended in Santo Domingo when they romped to a 2-1 victory over neighbouring Trinidad & Tobago.
The girls’ team had only just come off a 2-0 win against Panama and their confidence was high as Dey first easily disposed of her Trinidadian opponent Juliet Campbell 4-0, 4-0 in just under 45 minutes.
Dey’s play improved immensely over the course of the tournament as she gained confidence in her ability to compete and her 4-0, 4-0 win represented the best tennis she played throughout the tournament.
Ramdyhan, who played Dajohnique Delancy quickly went down 3-0 as her opponent dictated the pace and eventually lost the first pro set 4-1.
The second set was tightly contested and was tied up at 3-3 before Delancy won 5-3.
The deciding matchup in the doubles represented the best tennis the pair played throughout the tournament as they refused to give in and ended up pulling off a thrilling 4-6, 7-5, 10-8 victory over the Trinidadians.
In the first set, Dey/Ramdyhan went ahead 4-2, but could not close off the Trinidadian girls who won the set 6-4. The second set saw the Guyanese girls rebound as they battled back from being down 4-5 and 30-0 to even the match, before completing a 7-5 win.
The super tiebreaker decider saw some excellent tennis from both pairs and in the end it was a service winner by Ramdyhan at 8-8 and a return winner by Dey which clinched the win for Guyana.
The consecutive wins over Panama and Trinidad saw Guyana placing 13th in the Girls Fed Cup.
The boys did not fare well over the tournament and they crashed out with losses in their 9th to 16th playoffs.
The seven-member team returned to Guyana on Sunday evening after the week long tournament.
