GMR&SC ‘Race of Champions’ Meeting…Vieira upbeat about his chances of doing well
Keen on regaining the status of champion, former Group 4 title holder Mark Vieira seems to be leaving no stone unturned in his quest to make it back to the top.
Vieira, who has made intermittent appearances over the past two years speaking with Kaieteur Sport recently said he was keen on getting back into the dominant form that he was in some three years ago and has been preparing meticulously both the car and himself for Sunday’s Guyana Motor Racing & Sports Club ‘Race of Champions’ Meeting, at the South Dakota Circuit.

The local speed ace that will be driving his upgraded ex-Belgium Touring car RX8 which is fitted with a rotary 20B engine speaking with this newspaper said that he expects to be highly competitive and fans could expect to see the kind of performance that they had come accustomed to from him.
Vieira, quizzed on how he expects the machine to perform sounded optimistic, adding that apart from him needing to be dominant, he has his eyes set on erasing Barbados’ Roger Mayers lap record which currently stands at 34.585 seconds done last November during the final leg of the Caribbean Series.
He disclosed that the car has been reliable to date and has registered some impressive times so he is hoping that with the competition he can go faster and regain the lap record for Guyana.
“I would like to beat Mayers’ record because I feel that South Dakota is our own and the lap record should be held by a Guyanese,” Vieira stated.
The normally outspoken driver was also seen working on his fitness under the guidance of Personal Trainer Kezqweyah Yisrael at the club’s facility on Albert Street where many other competitors go to keep themselves fit and mentally ready for the rigours of the sport.
He was seen going through a rigourous session along with other competitors such as his cousin Stephen and fellow Group 4 driver Irfaan Kalamadeen as they whip themselves into shape for Sunday’s event.
Vieira conceded that drivers such as veteran Andrew King, Kevin Jeffrey, Keith Evelyn, Vishok Persaud and his brother Paul will not be easy to beat so he is not taking them lightly.
The first race commences from 09:00 hrs and tickets are $1500 for adults, while children and vehicles are free.
