– sets personal record in his “best performance to-date”
National distance athlete, Lionel D’Andrade sent tongues wagging and invoked newspaper headlines
like “Foreigners dominate…” in Trinidad after he emphatically snatched the Trinidad and Tobago International Half Marathon on Sunday.
Guyana’s D’Andrade not only won the race, but he did so in a personal record of 1:12.47, which was better than his second place 1:13.41 finish last year. The performance is his best at all levels since he has been residing and competing in Trinidad.
Guyana received another top three podium finish when D’Andrade’s national counterpart, Kelvin Johnson raced to second with 1:13.42 ahead of Trinidad’s Curtis Cox (1:18.14). D’Andrade was ecstatic about the result when he spoke to Kaieteur Sport yesterday.
“I dreamt the night before that I won this race; that is how much it was on my mind, and I came and did exactly what I dreamt. This feels great and it confirms that I am much better over longer distances. I am taking that serious,” D’Andrade indicated.
He stated that he usually comes in for flak for not being able to replicate similar performances in especially the South American 10km Classic, but believes that is as a result of him being unable to competitively adjust to the lesser distances. D’Andrade informed that 10ks and 5ks may soon become speed work for him in preparation for marathons and half marathons.
The local athlete defeated over 200 competitors on Sunday in a race that included athletes from the Caribbean, North America and Africa. Trinidad and Tobago’s, Tonya Nero won the female version of the race that was held at the Queens Park Savannah. (Edison Jefford)
