– pretends to be man’s grandson
An 80-year-old Blue Berry Hill, Linden man who was ‘scammed’ out of two gold rings worth some $300,000 is appealing to residents to be on the lookout for the con artist, who duped him into giving him the rings.
According to St Clair David, the perpetrator who resides in Block 22, Linden, called him on his telephone mimicking his grandson who is in the United States, and who is expected in Guyana shortly.
“Now I expect my grandson soon, and this scamp seems to know this, because he told me, Granddad I’ve sent some barrels and I want you to clear them before I come, so I’m sending my friend to collect the money to clear them. However I didn’t have cash at the time and I told him. He then advised me to give the guy any jewellery I had.
I now like a fool, when this guy turned up at me house in a taxi, gave him me two gold rings, not realizing at the time that it was the same person that had called me, pretending to be my grandson.”
David said that he is acquainted with the individual who is a known con artist, and that the man even called him after the incident asking him (David) to give him some time to give him back his money, and another time mimicking his father’s voice and making promises about getting back the money.
According to David, the man’s father is a prominent individual in the community, who has to constantly bail his son out of the numerous ‘scrapes’ he gets into.
“This chap is also well known to the police, and right now they are trying to catch him, but he is eluding them all the time. Residents of the area are also hoping to catch him, before the police does.
