– need another $2.9m for full participation
Guyana’s 2012 Junior CARIFTA Games athletics team is in dire need of funds if a full-fledged team is to
represent Guyana at the April 6-9 Games in Bermuda. That was according to President of the Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG), Colin Boyce yesterday.
Boyce was speaking to Kaieteur Sport on the latest status of the squad after he met with the parents of the athletes, who were identified as part of a 10-man team for the Games. “The CARIFTA team is in dire need of sponsorship,” Boyce bluntly indicated.
The association had selected five athletes whose place on the team is certain after they made the qualifying standards; those athletes include Chavez Ageday, Stephan James, Davin Fraser, Tevin Garraway and Timothy Fullington.
Meanwhile, another five athletes, who narrowly missed the qualifying standards, were named as part of a 10-member team; those athletes included Andrea Foster, Rupununi-based athlete Caiton Samuels, Tirono Mitchelle, Shomaine Daniels and Letitia Myles.
The AAG President had previously indicated that the likelihood of the latter five athletes being able to compete at the Games will depend heavily on added sponsorship. The team is one of the largest teams being mulled to represent Guyana at the Games.
Boyce confirmed yesterday that the association is attempting to send all the athletes to the event, but it
will require another $2.9 million. He informed that the association had amassed a total of about $1.2 million from its fundraiser and from sponsorship.
However, according to Boyce, the likelihood of all 10 of the athletes competing in Bermuda will require another $2.9 million. The AAG President stated that the team is scheduled to depart next Tuesday, but airline tickets must be purchased before Thursday.
