– as victim and owner disagree on settlement
Last month’s pit bull mauling of a man on his way to Masjid seems certainly headed for
the courts, as the parties involved have reached a dead end with regards to an amicable settlement.
While the victim of the attack, Mabarack Ali, faces permanent disfigurement, the owner of the dogs Dave Prashad, is insisting that he is still awaiting a response from him on the compensation offer he has made.
Prashad said that he had offered Ali compensation in the sum of $200,000 an amount that Ali and his wife maintain is insufficient to even cover his ongoing medical treatment.
And to make matters worse, Ali said that the police investigators who are handling the matter appear to be dragging their feet.
On February 20, last, the 63-year-old Ali left his Campbellville home around 05:00 for the Kitty Masjid to offer his daily prayers when he was attacked by some vicious pit bulls.
Thanks to the bravery of some neighbours, Ali escaped death from the jaws of the two canines.
Nevertheless, he still had to undergo emergency surgery at the Georgetown Hospital for his severely damaged hands and body, which he sustained while trying to ward off the animals.
The dogs were earlier engaged in a bitter battle with some other dogs in the area, having managed to escape from their owner’s yard, which is situated about six doors from Ali’s.
The owner of the dogs was arrested by the police after the matter was reported, but was subsequently placed on station bail.
Ali spent two weeks in the Georgetown Hospital recovering from his injuries and during this time the two neighbours could not reach a settlement.
Ali’s wife, Khiroon, had informed this newspaper that the owner of the dogs was not cooperating in terms of rendering assistance to her stricken husband, who is now incapable of holding anything with his badly damaged left hand.
“All he concern about is not going into the lock-ups.”
The woman disputed Prashad’s claim that he did make an offer.
“He never give we anything. He never make an offer. I was surprised when I saw what he said in the papers about assisting us. He came to our house and it was like if he was threatening us. We have spent a lot of money,” Khiroon Ali told Kaieteur News.
But Prashad when contacted by this newspaper yesterday said that the claims made by the Alis were all untrue.
“I offered them $200,000 and they never tell me back anything. I am willing to speak to them. I am trying to settle the matter,” he said.
The Alis are also concerned with the slow pace the police are dealing with the matter.
According to the wounded man, the police have already taken statements in the matter and have been provided with a medical certificate.
“My husband gave the police a statement on March 3rd and a few days later we provided them with the medical. The detective said that he was sending the file to the DPP the following day, but when we checked with the DPP a week after, the file still had not reached there. This is frustrating,” Khiroon Ali said.
“My husband can’t even sleep at nights. He don’t know how to fix his hand. This thing has cost me a lot.”
The woman said that she and her husband are willing to go to court if they cannot reach a settlement with the owner of the dogs, who is also willing to let the matter be decided legally.
If it has to go to court then so be it,” Prashad declared. He said that it was not as if he deliberately set his dogs upon Ali.
But what about the dogs?
According to the Alis, their neighbour is still rearing the vicious animals.
“He told us that he was going to get rid of them, but he went and get another dog, a German Shepherd, and the two pit bulls almost killed it,” Khiroon Ali stated.
As for her husband, although his injury is not life-threatening, it is feared that it can cause some disability and disfigurement.
