The Berbice Cricket Board (BCB) commitment to clubs in the West Berbice area
continues to be fulfilled with the launching of a 20/20 tournament for the area when the Management of Norman Singh Memorial handed over a cheque for $120 000 to the Board.
BCB Public Relations Officer, Hilbert Foster, at the simple presentation ceremony which took place at the Region 5 Regional Democratic Council Office on Thursday 22nd March stated that the Board had committed to host three tournaments for West Berbice in 2012.
Those commitments were fulfilled with the launching of the Hand-in-Hand 40-Overs, Norman Singh Memorial 20/20 and Jumbo Jet 2 day Inter-zone Tournaments.
Foster urged the clubs in the area to strive for excellence at all times and to make sure that they take advantage of the opportunities presented to them by the Board. The 20/20 Tournament which will be played on a knockout basis would involve 16 teams. The final is scheduled for the Blairmont Community Centre.
Foster extended gratitude to the Regional Chairman of Region 5, Mr. B. Bisnauth, who assisted the Board to obtain the sponsorship. Noting that the Berbice Board enjoys a good relationship with both the Region 5 and 6 Regional Democratic Council, Foster said that cricket in the ancient county is set to achieve even greater heights in 2012.
Regional Chairman Bisnauth in handing over the sponsorship cheque praised the BCB for the outstanding and offered congrats to the Board for the investment it is making in Region 5. He committed his administration in working along with the Board and also to assist with the cricket grounds in the Region.
He also expressed gratitude to Norman Singh Memorial for readily agreeing to the sponsorship.
BCB apart from the three tournaments has already hosted a one day cricket academy and several coaching clinics in West Berbice while several clubs has also benefitted from millions of dollars worth of gears and other items from the Board and Food for the Poor.
Cricket in West Berbice has been neglected for years under the present administration of the West Berbice Cricket Association (WBCA) which is headed by Guyana’s Cricket Manager David Black and the BCB has committed itself to reverse the situation.
