A 41-year-old miner who allegedly discharged a loaded firearm at his estranged wife was yesterday placed on $250,000 bail, when he appeared before Chief Magistrate Priya Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.
The accused, William Mittelholzer of Lot ‘A’ Enachu Street Campbellville, reportedly opened fire on Shevon Clement, the mother of his nine-year-old daughter. The charge states that on March 17 at D’ Urban Street Werk-en-Rust, with intent to maim, disfigure or cause grievous bodily harm, Mittelholzer discharged the firearm at the woman.
The police said that Mittelholzer is the reputed husband of the complainant, and the two individuals once shared a relationship that had gone sour some 10 months ago. The police prosecutor said that on the day of the incident the accused went to Clement’s home and an argument ensued. This allegedly led to Mittelholzer pulling a gun from his pants waist and discharging a round at the woman. Clement, the prosecutor said, was able to escape without injuries. A report was made to the police and Mittelholzer was arrested.
Defence attorney Glenn Hanoman pressed for his client’s pre-trial liberty while telling the court that Clement was merely trying to get back at Mittelholzer for the misunderstanding that led to them having to part ways. The lawyer said that the allegations against his client were false since the man was nowhere around during the time of the alleged offence.
Hanoman continued that he was informed that his client when apprehended by the police was held on narcotics charges. He said when his colleague visited the defendant at the police holding area he was at the narcotics branch, and now there is the allegation of discharging a firearm.
This, however, led to a promote response from Attorney-at-law Vic Puran who claimed that Mittelholzer was involved in a drug matter and that he was wanted by Surinamese officials. Hanoman did not take lightly the intervention of Puran whose remarks he said were prejudicial to his client.
Hanoman further revealed that Mittelholzer was swabbed for gunpowder residue, but none was found. And with this, a tearful Clement assured the court that a gun was used. She said that the warhead was recovered at her home and that a named police officer had collected it.
Clement added that she was fearful for her life, claiming that the accused was threatening to kill her and had told her that he did not have to commit the act, but could hire persons to do so.
The Magistrate then asked that checks be made for the warhead.
Mittelholzer was then granted bail.
