Guyana face Jamaica from Friday
A media release from Robin Singh, the Cricket Operations Officer of the now non-operational Guyana Cricket Board yesterday named the Guyana squad to participate in the semi-finals of the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) Regional First Class cricket tournament.
Due to the unavailability of Test batsman Ramnaresh Sarwan, West Indies leg-spinner Devendra Bishoo replaces him for the crucial final-four encounter in the only change to the side which participated in the drawn encounter against Trinidad and Tobago in Guyana’s last match.
Defending champions and tournament leaders Jamaica will host Guyana in one semi-final, while Barbados will be at home to Trinidad and Tobago in the other semi-final. Both semi-finals commence on Friday.
Following is the release from Robin Singh.
The Guyana Cricket Board is pleased to announce the squad for the WICB Regional 4 day Tournament Semi-finals.
Shivnarine Chanderpaul (Captain), Devendra Bishoo, Trevon Griffith, Narsingh Deonarine, Assad Fudadin, Leon Johnson, Veerasammy Permaul, Christopher Barnwell, Royston Crandon, Derwin Christian, Chanderpaul Hemraj, Brandon Bess, Ronsford Beaton
Devendra Bishoo replaces Ramnaresh Sarwan who is unavailable for this game.
Chanderpaul whose innovative Captaincy has earned high praise from regional cricket pundits, will once again lead his men into competition ably assisted by Vice-Captain Veerasammy Permaul.
The return to form off Narsingh Deonarine this year’s regional run-scoring leader with 547 runs at an average of 49.72 with 6 half centuries, has been a welcome one for West Indies cricket fans everywhere.
His closest rival on the runs aggregate is Berbice Skipper Assad Fudadin with 538 runs at an average of 53.80. Both Guyanese batsmen have also exhibited considerable bowling prowess and have made pressing cases for West Indies selection for the upcoming Test series against Australia.
The GCB would like to congratulate the team on their efforts so far this year and offer our full support and encouragement for the upcoming game.
The management team remains unchanged and we urge Coach Crandon, his assistant David Harper and manager David Black to keep up the good work.
Due to ongoing court matters all correspondence with regards to the GCB should be done with the Cricket Operations Officer.
