– action continues Saturday with double header
Charlestown Secondary School boys team and Tucville Secondary girls earned three points yesterday as the Scotia Bank/Pepsi Schools’ Football Tournament continued to give Guyana’s youths valuable exposure at an early stage in the most popular played game globally at the Georgetown Football Club ground.
The double header, which saw Charlestown and Queens College (QC) clashing in the final game of the day, was a tasty game for the parents and students who came to cheer on their favoured team.
The encounter between the two turned out to be a battle to the bottom as the QC boys tried endlessly to draw the game which was in favour of Charlestown. Shane Morris netted three goals for Charlestown with the first in the opening half and the other two on resumption of the second half.
Morris’ goal, which opened the account in the 15th minute, came when QC’s keeper Isaiah Hope attempted to take possession of the ball; Morris fast legs quickly guided him to the ball to score.
Morris added another to the account when the ball escaped from Hope’s hand in the 50th minute, a kick from his right foot completed the task. Josiah Charles took over from his teammate and scored five minutes later to make it 3-0. Omar Somes contributed to the account in the 58th minute when the keeper was caught off guard when a powerful left leg blast surged pass his body.
Two shocking goals were netted by Aftab Crandon minutes apart but his replies were too late as time was near. Crandon who received a lucrative pass from Michael DeCosta just outside the 6 yards box, skillfully dribbled three Charlestown players and blasted the ball from his left leg which rushed pass Christopher McPherson, the goalkeeper in the 60th minute.
Morris netted his final goal in the 63rd minute when the ball deflected off Hope’s gloves.
Crandon took another strike eight minutes later, when he received another ball from Snif Ibrahim from the left flank, the aggressive player positively advanced to the keeper who tried to retrieve the ball but was unsuccessful when the smart thinking player kicked the ball out of his reach in the 58th minute to leave the keeper in disbelief.
Meanwhile, Tucville Secondary mauled Tutorial High 4-1 in the opening clash with Treole Elliot and Dacia Brandt scoring dual goals apiece.
Elliot’s two goals were scored in the 4th minute of the first half and in the 30th minute in the second half.
Brandt scored her second goal when a penalty kick was awarded to the team in the 20th minute in second half; the first was scored when she tapped the ball into net after beating goalkeeper, Malian Braithwaite to the punch when she tried to gain possession of the ball.
The girls who defended their territory halted most of the created scoring opportunities for the girls in grey (Tutorial) but were unable to halt Nateifa Marville’s goal in the 23rd minute in the final half.
The action continues Saturday with a double header between defending female champs, North Georgetown and Campbellville. Christ Church and Lodge will clash shortly after conclusion of the girl’s game. (Juanita Hooper)
