The opening salvoes of the Upper Demerara Football Association First Division League produced shock results when it kicked off on Monday evening at the Mackenzie Sports Club Ground, Linden.
Winners Connection shocked Bakewell Topp XX 3-1, while Silver Shattas broke down Net Rockers with a 3-2 victory.
Winners Connection took control when striker Rawle ‘Boney’ Gittens scored from a header off a squared ball in the 16th minute only to see the Topp XX side even things through a 30th minute goal off the boot of Darrel George, when the first half expired the game was even 1-1.
Winners Connection broke the deadlock through a fine run by Charles Harvey down the centre as he dribbled his way inside before landing a shot in the 56th minute to give his side a 2-1 lead.
Winners Connection then gained a commanding advantage 70 minutes on when Renee Gibbons connected from a nice pass to the right after in clearing the ball from an attempt down the left wing. The goal strengthened Winners’ advantage which they never relinquished to wrap up the rubber 3-1.
The second game was also exciting as DeShawn Freeman sent Silver Shattas into the lead with a goal in the 39th minute effort against Net Rockers. The first half saw the scores unchanged but after play began in the second half there was some urgency by the Rockers and this paid off as they drew level in the 55th minute through Michael Williams.
With the tempo going for them Rockers took the lead four minutes later through Clarence Huggins. This lead they enjoyed for thirty minutes before Nigel Bennet leveled the scores again for Silver Shattas.
As it appeared to be a n even contest the win was snatched in the 91st minute with a beautiful goal from Eldeus Burke who received a neat ball from Leon Clement and made no mistake with a rasping shot to score.
Action was slated to continue last evening Winners Connection were set to play 2011 Amelia’s Ward United while CBR Mining Milerock were to match skills with Net Rockers.
