Long distance athletes will be given another opportunity to gauge their 2012 season when the annual Desmond Dorsette Memorial Road Race Classic is held this Sunday (tomorrow) in the Corentyne from at 09:00hrs.
The event which is spearheaded by widow of the late Superintendent Dorsette, Waveney, a retired Head Mistress, will see over 30 athletes facing starters orders, the event, opened to athletes from the Ancient County is sponsored by the Dorsette Family of No 50 Village, Upper Corentyne.
In the Under-19 category, athletes will be covering a distance of four miles, starting at No. 47 Village, concluding at the popular Sports Complex at No. 53 Village. Athletes in the Under-13 division will kick off their journey at No. 49 Village to also end at No. 53.
Prizes for the category winners and top performers include cash, trophies, t-shirts, ribbons and other memorabilia.
Certificates of participation will also be presented to all competitors by the sponsors.
Meanwhile, a funday will be held after the event at the Sports Complex following the conclusion of the road race.
Activities planned are softball cricket, volleyball, football, dominos; novel events including egg and spoon race, three-legged race, sack race, needle and thread, sal pass (out) and coconut peeling race.
The late Superintendent Desmond Dorsette was an ardent sports fan who participated in numerous sporting activities including cricket and athletics during his hey day in the Guyana Police Force and in the community.
