An urgent call for blood by the National Blood Transfusion Service (NBTS) has prompted the staff of Scotia Bank Guyana to begin their annual blood drive activity earlier than usual.
The actual testing and extraction was done at the company’s Carmichael Street, Georgetown location last Thursday. The event had been scheduled for August.
The staff of both the Carmichael and Robb Street branches donated 15 units of blood.
The Bank’s Manager, Naseeb Mohamed, told Kaieteur News that the company has always been fond of giving back and finds no better way to do so than giving one’s own blood.
One of the donors, Orette Cutting, told Kaieteur News that he believes giving blood is a noble thing which everyone should at least try to do.
“Blood is the only thing that really and truly connects the entire world,” Cutting said.
In order to donate blood, one has to be at least 18 years of age, weighing no less than 110 pounds with no history of HIV/ AIDS, hepatitis or any infection which can be transmitted to others through blood fusion.
The first step in giving blood is to provide an Identification Card; followed by a mini health check to know if the donor meets the criteria. Body weight, pulse, blood pressure, temperature and HB (Iron) level will all have to be checked.
If the possible donor is not deferred in step two, they will have to be interviewed to further determine if their health status and sexual activities permit them to be a donor. This session is one that takes approximately 15 minutes and is private and confidential.
Commercial Sex Workers, Men who have Sex with Men (MSM) or anyone involved in same sex relationships are among some of those who cannot be blood donors.
If eligible in previous stages, one unit of blood will be extracted from the donor. After this, the donor is advised to abstain from strenuous activities and drink non alcoholic beverages for the rest of the day.
