Canada-based drivers already in town
As a testimony to the seriousness of the competitors currently preparing for the upcoming Guyana Motor Racing & Sports Club (GMR&SC) April 1 ‘Race of Champions’ Meeting, two of the three based in Canada are already in town.
Kaieteur Sport visited the club on Thursday afternoon to conduct interviews and was pleasantly surprised to see Group 4 drivers Paul Vieira and Shawn King enjoying a round table discussion with another driver Vishok Persaud and Mark Vieira’s wife.
Vieira and King will be looking to produce some inspiring performances to be among the Guyana team that is scheduled to participate
in the season opening Caribbean Series on May 20, at the Dover Raceway in Jamaica.
However, they will have to contend with the likes of veteran Andrew King, Mark Vieira, Ryan Rahaman, Keith Evelyn, Vishok Persaud, Gavin Gayadin and Irfaan Kalamadeen and they will need to be at their level best to upstage those drivers.
Paul (Vieira) speaking with this newspaper said that he came in early to effect some repairs to his Mazda RX7 which suffered some amount of damage during the last Race Meet in November, while King, who has been a wonderful servant for his country, participating in every leg of the Caribbean Series for some years now said he is confident of doing well and is hoping to get in some lap time very soon.
The Group 4 category as always is the marquee event with the fastest cars in the country stacked in the division so fans could look forward to a day where skills, thrills and hopefully no spills dominate the day’s races.
Trinidad and Tobago’s Ravi Singh, Kamal Seebarran, Kemal Rahaman and Ryan Rahaman are anticipated to take to the starting line in the Group 3 division.
Among the Group 2 B category, drivers such as Shairaz Roshandin, Afraz Allie, Danny Persaud, Marcel Profitt, Vishaul Sawh and Suriname’s Oliver Tjin Liep Shie will once again renew their fierce rivalry.
The Group 2A Division is loaded with talent and most of the competitors are known to be very keen on success.
Among those anticipated to be in the fray for top honours include Chet Singh, Jad Rahaman, Syed Hassan, Aaron Bethune and Roshan Ali, who incidentally is the man to beat now in the category.
The Super bike division has been developing plenty interest and even though Stephen ‘Valentino Rossi’ Vieira remains the rider to beat, Joel Neblett, Maurice Menezes and Carlos Rodrigues could still have some say on the day.
The first race commences from 09:00 hrs and tickets are $1500 for adults, while children and vehicles are free.
